The Rev. Canon Anne E. Kitch
Canon for Ministry Formation and Transitions

The Lord looks down from heaven upon us all,
to see is there is any who is wise,
if there is one who seeks after God.
Psalm 14:2

I have already walked out to my husband’s car in the cold morning air when I realize I don’t have the key. I just need to grab the bag I left in the back of his car and put it in mine. It was supposed to be a quick errand. I walk back to the house and grab the extra car key and attempt my task again only this time it is the wrong key and now I am concerned about time and being ready. Back to the house I go accompanied by disagreeable words spoken barely under my breath. I paw through the drawer where the keys are kept and not finding what I am looking for feel the anger take hold and demand my whole self.

An unpleasant mantra begins in my head—I will not be prepared, I will now be late, everything is lost. The enemy’s logic. In the midst of the downward spiral, I recognize this for the lie it is. After all, I have been down this road before.

Perhaps a conversation with Jesus would be a better choice. Even as this thought forms, I feel the holy presence enfold me and I have to smile at my own foolishness. Why do I always choose the hard way?

The key is to seek God.
