A little more than 20 years ago I was asked in a job interview what had brought me to that moment. I began my answer, “I’ve been on a journey…” As I look back on my life, I think I’ve been on a journey/pilgrimage with many legs since I graduated from high school. Prior to that, my life was quiet and routine and comfortable and safe. Then I consciously chose the first pilgrimage: I applied to a small liberal arts college. I didn’t know that the degree in Elementary Education would be only a tiny portion of my learning. At Blackburn College I encountered beliefs, ideas, and people that opened my vision of the world and God. Now, 51 years later, I find myself blogging about a personal Pilgrimage (June 11 – 23 in Uganda) that continues to open my heart and mind as I experience God at work.
Whenever I am afraid I will trust in You.
Psalm 56:3
Wayne Divis and I boarded the plane at Newark with great anticipation that in less than twenty hours we would be in Kampala, Uganda gathering supplies and exchanging our US currency for Ugandan schillings. We are on a pilgrimage to support a ministry begun more than 20 years ago by a Ugandan Anglican priest. Our enthusiasm came to a screeching halt when we couldn’t get on the plane that would take us from Nairobi, Kenya to Entebbe, Uganda. It was a perfect storm…two airlines without an agreement which meant NO boarding passes. However, representatives from the same two airlines who work in the Nairobi Airport joined forces to make our flight happen 24 hours later!
Thanks be to God for helpers along our pilgrim way.
