Happy are the people who know the festal shout!
they walk, O Lord, in the light of your presence.
Psalm 89:15

It is unseasonably warm. And not just where I reside, but social media posts suggest a widespread dissatisfaction with the weather. Especially among those who are preparing to celebrate Christmas.

In my part of the world, what people want is snow. Not enough snow to make travel difficult, but enough for a white Christmas—though admittedly there are some in my own household who wouldn’t mind being snowed in.

I think of the collective energy of so many people wanting the weather to cooperate at the same time, and what it is about our ritual celebrations that call out for all our senses to be engaged in a time collapse where remembered delight and festivity is evoked and wedded to the now. So many people simultaneously yearning for joy.

Come, Lord Jesus.
